Biography

Bezhigobinesikwe

I am an enrolled member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwa who has worked at the Tribal College for over 30 years. I was born at the Indian Hospital in Cass Lake and am a Veteran of the U.S. Army. Interestingly, even though I am afraid of heights, I am jump master qualified, having jumped out of airplanes and helicopters 60 times! My mother and father are both band members and storytellers, so I am a storyteller. Returning home from the military, I was elected as the first female and Ojibwe Mayor of the City of Cass Lake. I live on the beautiful east end of Cass Lake where I am raising my oldest grandchildren. I had a vision many years ago which lead me to learn about the history of Leech Lake. Consequently, one of the courses that I love teaching is History of Leech Lake. In all the courses that I teach, I explain that we are not minorities. Rather we are peoples of Nations. In all of my courses, I share our legends, and experiential learning.
