Biography

Giniw (Colin Eagle) is an environmental scientist and educator specializing in natural resource management, sustainability, and Indigenous knowledge systems. He holds a Master of Science in Environmental Studies from Bemidji State University, where he researched microplastic accumulation in fish food chains. His academic background also includes a Bachelor of Science in Indigenous Sustainability Studies, bridging Western scientific methodologies with Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK).

Colin has held diverse research and teaching roles, including mentoring students in sustainability and Indigenous worldviews as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Bemidji State University. His work with the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe’s Division of Resource Management (LLBO DRM) includes roles as Water Resources Technician, Outreach Coordinator, and Herbarium Assistant, contributing to water quality monitoring, invasive species management, and ecological education.

His conservation efforts extend to the United States Forest Service, where he assisted in Variable Density Thinning and Retention studies. He has presented research at national conferences, translating field data into actionable ecological insights.

A dedicated leader, Colin has served as President of the AISES Chapter and Leech Lake Tribal College STEM Club. His accolades include the Sequoyah Fellowship from AISES, McNair Scholar distinction, and Bemidji State University Roger Aitken Leadership Award.

Committed to integrating Indigenous and Western science, Colin advances research, education, and policy that support tribal sovereignty and climate resilience. His expertise in GIS mapping, grant management, and community engagement helps drive sustainable initiatives within tribal and academic settings.
